Dear Friend
How are you feeling today? I’m a little exhausted. I couldn’t sleep last night, worrying about this four part series “Visit Wales with Ease”. For some reason I was restless about the way I’d written the past two articles. Not sure if the places I’d selected would be that interesting to you, as they are to me. So today, I’m surviving off three hours sleep. Please bare with me and sincere apologies for any grammatical mistakes.
What did you think of my recommendations for North Wales, which was your favourite?
Part 2 of this series takes us on a journey through Mid Wales, the most enchanting land, filled with the miles of lush green fields and market towns. Its proper agricultural land and farming is a huge part of the Mid Welsh economy.
I’m trying to tailor-make these recommendations for you, especially if you’re an aspiring writer, a journaling enthusiast and literary explorer. So if you’re seeking to immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry of Mid Wales I think you’ll enjoy reading this article. I dearly hope so.
Here are three remarkable locations that offer unique experiences for any creativity minded soul…
1. Relax in The Poetry Pharmacy - Montgomery
Nestled in the picturesque market town of Montgomery, the Poetry Pharmacy is a haven for word lovers. It’s super cute and such an innovative space, the first of its kind in the UK. They’ve just launched a new store on Oxford Street in London above LUSH. This innovation independent brand operates on the premise that poetry can be a balm for the soul.
What makes it so special:
- Bibliotherapy consultations where visitors can book a session with the ‘poetry pharmacist’ who prescribes poems to address emotional needs.
- Carefully curated bookshop focusing on poetry and wellbeing literature
- A peaceful reading room offering a tranquil space for reflection and writing
- Regular events including poetry readings and writing workshops, what’s not to love. Maybe I’ll be able to host a journaling workshop there one day?!
For the writers, The Poetry Pharmacy offers a unique opportunity to explore the healing power of words. What I love about it most is that it’s an ideal spot for journaling, finding inspiration or simply soaking up the atmosphere. The perfect fodder for a creative mind don’t you agree?
2. Be dazzled by The Old Electric Shop - Hay-on-Wye
Now if you love to go back in time, and you’re a big lover of vintage goods, you’ll be in retail heaven in The Old Electric Shop. Located in the world famous bookish town of Hay-on-Wye, this retail store stands out as a delightful mishmash of creativity and quirkiness.
What makes it so special…
- An eclectic product range, from vintage finds to contemporary design pieces.
- The funky cafe offers locally sourced food and great coffee in a bright and vibrant setting.
- Regular cultural events including book launches and art exhibitions
- Located in the heart of the town, surrounded by dozens of bookshops and literary history
For the writers, this store serves as the perfect base to explore Hay. Its cafe is an excellent spot fro writing, co-working, and people watching. There is a really good vibe, it caters for all ages, and I return time and time again, because it always sparks my creativity.
3.Stay for a long weekend at the Welsh Lavender Farm
Now this is a real secret gem, hidden in the rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons, this lavender farm is a sensory delight and a testament to one woman’s vision.
What makes it special…
- Stunning location, with panoramic views of the Brecon Beacons National Park, recently renamed as Bannau Brycheiniog.
- On site accommodation, allowing for an immersive farm stay experience, and if you’re into your cold water therapy, you can jump into their very large, fresh water pond for an early morning swim.
- The farm shop and cafe offers lavender based products and local treats. There are a variety of independent brands that champion all things Welsh, local and eco friendly.
- The founder’s story is an interesting one. Nancy is a journalist, born in Canada, who fell in love with an Oxfordshire philosopher. 20 years ago they bought a sheep farm but were considering alternative uses for the farm, Nancy came up with the idea to grow lavender, and the rest is history.
For the writers, Welsh Lavender Farm offers a tranquil retreat for writers, especially those who are seeking inspiration from nature. The calming influence of lavender, combined with the breathtaking landscape, creates the ideal environment for introspection and creativity. For me Nancy’s journey from journalist to lavender farmer has served as inspiration for me to write about midlife changes, and the benefits of rural living.
How about a few writing opportunities whenever you visit the farm…
- Journal about the sensory experience of the lavender fields in full bloom.
- Why not ask Nancy for an interview about her transition from journalism to farming. It could make for a really interesting Substack article.
- Use the farm as a setting for a short story.
- Reflect on the contrast between urban and rural life.
Here are a few more delightful places to visit in Mid Wales, don’t forget to take your journal…
Indulge at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel and spa - Lake Vyrnwy
Retreat to a luxury treehouse at Squirrels Nest - Llandrindod Wells
Feed the Red Kites - Rhayader
Roam around Powys Castle and its grounds - Welshpool

Whether you’re seeking poetic prescriptions in Montgomery, eclectic inspiration in Hay-on-Wye, or lavender scented serenity in the Brecon Beacons, I honestly believe Mid Wales provides everything the literary traveler is looking for.
Tomorrow, I’ll take you on a virtual exploration of South Wales, a place I’ve called home for over 30 years. Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, offers a very cosmopolitan, vibrant atmosphere. Providing an equal blend of historical charm and modern dynamism. I think I’m going to struggle to limit my recommendations, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx

I love these articles. I have dreamed of exploring Wales. My grandfather was born in Pembrokeshire his family were farmers for generations, but as his father wasn’t the oldest he went into the church. Your articles are really pushing my buttons in all the right places. They are brilliant thank you Tanya. ❤️❤️❤️
You don't need to figure out (of all the choices available) what might suit my interest. I am curious about what you find interesting in Wales. I recommend the festival How the Light Gets In (mainly talks) that is held in May at Hay-on-Wye and especially the Once in a Blue Moon Cafe (from Bristol) that is at the festival. You can catch the Once in a Blue Moon Cafe at Woodsie in Glastonbury or at Shambala as well.
