Marvellous. I’ve just finished The Safekeep, which ranks along the Salt Path as deep explorations of what makes a place feel like home, and how it feels when it might (or is) taken from you. I live about as far from the sea as Britain can manage (the West Midlands) so I made the most of a week in Southampton to dip my toes in the beach on the Isle of Wight and bought several books to feed my desire for the sea till our family holiday next month. The Blue Machine, Trelawney’s Cornwall and Undercurrent should do it! (And a book about the weather too, because I am British and I need something to talk about: “In All Weathers”)

Jenny thank you for your recommendations. The Safekeep is on my TBR pile and I cant believe I've not yet managed to read it. I loved Undercurrent - so raw in places though. Sending you soothing ocean vibes from Wales

This is so beautiful, Tanya! I'm getting to ready to move to a cottage near the sea in West Sussex, and it's exactly what I've been looking for--that home-like place that I can settle into for a while. I'm thinking I must have stayed in about 30 homes since I began my travels, and I'm so ready to hang my hat somewhere for a while. Like you, I haven't felt at home anywhere or in any one place. I keep hoping I'll stumble upon a real 'home' and be able to stay!

Thank you for your thoughtful words Anne. Oh a cottage by the sea, how wonderful. It will be a much needed tonic I’m sure. I look forward to reading more about your travels!

Now that I’m feeling better, I’m looking forward to writing more regularly again. I got out of the habit and I’ve missed connecting! Once I’m settled (in Aug.), I’ll be able to really focus on developing some projects I’m hatching. I feel like I’m re-emerging after a long hibernation!

Ooh that is going to be such a treat for all of us who follow you. More Anne Boyd essays - yes please 🙏🤞

Do you think that it feels like home there because it is where you have found what you are good at, where you have made connections, and in a way you have found your purpose? Just a thought xxx

I think you’ve got the nail on the head there Nicola, and not forgetting the fact that the location has the WOW factor 😎 xx

How gorgeous Tanya. I’ve lived in 8 homes in the last decade and too many to count before that… your prompts land me into the remembrance that each home was exactly where I was meant to be at the time. xx

Ooh we need to share notes. I'm fascinated by the stories people share about their homes/houses and their sense of belonging

What a beautiful post Tanya. It got me thinking about home and for different reasons each house I have lived in has never always quite felt like home. Possibly the nearest was the first flat we bought together and where our daughter grew up, but our son had not been born. Therefore in hindsight our home wasn't yet complete. But there was a holiday house we returned to for a few years on a river wit boats moored and marshes on the other side of the river for those weeks it was home I belonged there. I have learnt not to go back I know it belongs to others now 😘
