Empathy extended. And with a long & lead-strained arm. I’ve a second dog now; my first dog proved to be the tipping pointer - well, Vizsla really, but near enough - that toppled a reasonably long marriage ten years ago. Roscoe is a runty rescue and shows me daily where I’m being inconsistent.
Thank you, Tanya 😀. She is a rescue (or I’m the rescue 😆) so I’m not too sure - a DNA test gave her 17 different breeds within her - including 3% wolf … so I’m going with that 😆🐾
Hello Tanya! ( apologies for the long read... the content feel’s important) I’m sooooo glad to have run across your stack 😇 a lovely bread crumb trail of amazing women and writers led me here. I have been a dog Mom since I was 8, King an American Husky so my love and heartbreak started early, I’m 60. Joy and grief with dogs, fur children, pets ..... I just call them family members struck an all time atomic level in 2022 when 4 of our darlings died in the space of 2 months. All our pets have been rescued up till now. Our 22 year rescue Chihuahua(4 time cancer survivor!) from a stroke, 12 year old Lab/Swis mountain mix from spinal injury, 16 year chihuahua we had recently cross country rescued from an aunt ( neighbor found her abandoned when aunt went to hospital and no one knew she has a dog) who just died in my arms, and our cat who was hit by a car when our neighbor was watching the house when we went for a weekend to grieve the 3 that had just died.
Anyway my husband “surprised” me with a PURE BRED CANE CORSO PUPPY after I said I needed space from animals for a bit. Fast forward celebrated Mia Bella’s 2nd birthday in January and the challenge has been only what I can call trauma induced love, because what can I do but love her, she is ours. Massive training, health issues, she was bit by nieces schnauzer and had to have 3 surgeries on her neck.... so much life sucking activity, and still there is joy. My husband wanted to breed her but I will not and next month she will be spayed. Even though he is very mopey, he understands I do not have the bandwidth to take on the enormous responsibilities associated with breeding even if she is from champions bloodline. Ok. Enough. I need to be here to listen, read, write and support. Carry on.
Happy to be here! We rehoused 3 dogs when I fell pregnant and so we are dog lovers but not owners. It was the right decision at the time and they went to lovely homes but it weighs heavy always. Would have loved Farrah’s workshop but I was hosting at the same time! Really considering being a paid subscriber for her as love her writing. ✍️
Hey Claire, thanks for your reply, always appreciated. Sometimes I sit here thinking am I writing just for me. So it's super lovely to have a connection with you. I'd love to hear more about your story and how it's affected you, positively or negatively or both. My mind boggles at how much the dogs have impacted my life and will continue to do so. I adore them but they my sanity is tested on a daily basis. It says more about me than the dogs. You'd have loved the workshop today. I learnt so much. I think her content is worth every penny. I'm hoping I can commit to writing on here consistently. It helps knowing there are other likeminded souls out there reading my posts. All won't be lost though. It's good writing practise if nothing else.
Ah yes I love that approach. I feel like my paper journalling and my Instagram has been good practise for Substack... we just never know where these roads are going to take us do we? ✨✍️
So we had two black labs and a border terrier. The labs were my husbands orginally before we met and he worked away for months at a time. The border I had from being a pup with an ex. When I fell pregnant we were in quite a small place and I couldn’t walk all three dogs myself. We re homes the labs first and tried to keep the border but I was too nervous to leave the baby around him as he was a little possessive of me. He went to live in Amsterdam with a family and now lives in the Lakes. I get regular updates! 😆 so sweet! 🐶❤️🩹
They are lovely. We’ve said we might when the children are older... I’m like 55% sure we will - it would take a lot to push up that percentage I think and I’m not sure what breed would suit. Our neighbours have a rescue dog who wasn’t treated well and she’s complex! It’s heartbreaking how many dogs need new homes isn’t it. Cx
Aww wow. What a story. Fair play you deserve a medal for all that you do and have done. I salute you.
A cane corso - not for the faint hearted. Stunning animals all the same.
My Ridgebacks captured a rather large bare this morning and ate the whole animal. It was pretty gruesome but they were doing what comes natural. There pray drive was unbelievable to watch
Thanks you commenting and sharing your story. It’s most appreciated. Hopefully connect with again one day. Keep on writing!

That’s a lovely story. I grew up with a black lab. Best dog ever. Would you get another dog?
