A book lovers dream is the opportunity to mooch down endless winding streets, especially ones filled with book shops old and new.
As a Birthday treat from my parents, I’m off to spend the day with them in Hay on Wye.
I’m magnetised to the place, I wonder why?!
The plan is to arrive for elevenses, mainly because I’ll need refuelling after my 1.5hour drive from Cardiff. I do love a country drive. Ooh and it’s a great excuse to listen to the latest episode on The Shift podcast by
I highly recommend you check if out of you haven’t already.First stop will be a cute cafe for a good old chin wag with my parents, over a flat white and a rather large wedge of homemade cake. It would be rude not to really.
Soon after I’ll be rushing over to one of my favourite independent stores in Hay, The Electric Shop. Check it out here www.oldelectric.co.uk
As much as I’ll want to zoom from store to store, Mama Lynch will be asking me to pace myself.
Reminding me not to rush about like a mad fool. There is no pressure to be home for the school run, dogs are all cared for and dinner, well there is always freezer surprise that the boys can make themselves.
I’ll try my best to ‘go slow’ as I know I need to savour every minute of what Hay has to offer.
After a couple of hours of book shop delights, Papa Lynch will no doubt take over, he’s ALWAYS been in charge of selecting the cutest eateries on our family outings.
I have such fond memories as a child, marching along side him, at a pace ( the man has what seems like 6 foot long legs). We’d stride from place to place, sometimes if I was lucky I’d get a shoulder carry.
Dad has always made it a priority that we stop off for a light lunch, refuelling regularly is part of the adventure he says. I like his style! Although my wedge of cake from earlier should fuel me for the day. Truth be told, I’d rather have cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner, wouldn’t you?!
After lunch, the plan is to continue wandering and weaving in between the many eccentric independent stores, happily getting lost down the charming lanes of Hay.
Have you ever been to Hay on Wye?
Maybe you’ve been to the world renowned Hay Book Festival?
If so, what did you think of it?
Did you meet anyone interesting?
Please share your Hay festival stories, I’d love to hear all about them.
I can’t get over how much of a major event it’s become, world renowned, nestled into a pretty little market town in Mid Wales.
I’m looking forward to spending quality time with my parents. Dad is battling prostate cancer and mum is in remission from bowel cancer. True heroes in my eyes. I cherish every single moment we have together, plus we have a real hoot, telling tales, giggling and putting the worlds to right.
Right I best get my skates on, I promised I’d meet them in the central car park at 11am. I’ll no doubt be sharing some photos of my trip later this week.
Wishing you a fabulous Tuesday.
Be kind to yourself and if you’re having a challenging morning, eat more cake I say!
Until the next time
Take care and be safe xx
I do love a visit to Hay! Certainly takes a full day's meandering to do it justice. Last time I was there and queuing peacefully in the main car park to pay, gentle breeze blowing, birds a-twittering, the entire queue jumped when a lady a few behind suddenly barked, "BUTTER!" before remarking to her companion that 'alas, she had run out at their accommodation.' She also verbally noted the need to buy 'writing implements', before commenting that while she liked Hay, there were just far too many bookshops for her liking. I often think of her and how disappointed she was to find a whole town teeming with bookshops! To me, it's paradise!
I’ve never been but sounds lovely! And how nice to have quality time with your parents 😊
