Oh hello blank screen, here we are again, you’re looking so fresh and white, where as I am feeling lost for words, so the pleasure is not all mine. Not today.
Ever found yourself staring blankly at the page, your mind devoid of words, your thoughts scattered like leaves in the wind? It happens to the best of us, best selling authors, copywriters, journalists and even seasoned journalers like myself. Thats why I’ve come to embrace what I call a “micro movement” in journaling - a simple yet powerful practice that can help us overcome writer’s block and reconnect with our inner voice.
You might be feeling stuck on what to write, I know how that feels. You sit down with your journal, pen poised over the paper but the words just won’t come.
Instead of forcing it, I invite you to try something different. Take a moment to think of three words - any words that resonate with you in that moment. Don’t overthink it. Select one of those words. Then set a timer for just three minutes. In that short span of time, allow yourself to explore that word.
How does it make you feel?
How does it manifest in your life?
Why did you choose that word?
I know firsthand the struggle of finding the motivation to write. It’s especially why I embarked on a personal challenge - to write every day for an entire year, from my 49th to my 50th birthday. Not for any grand purpose, but simply to see if I could commit to the practice, to push past my own tendencies toward procrastination.
And while I’ve been able to maintain a daily journaling habit for over 1000 consecutive days, Substack presented a unique challenge. The pressure to produce meaningful content, day after day, weighed heavily on me at times. Yet, even on the days when I felt uninspired, like today, I persevered. Because I know that consistency breeds progress and that sometimes even the smallest movement forward is worth celebrating. Plus, throughout my daily monologues I’ve become friends with so many wonderful strangers that I may never have met elsewhere. This virtual space is quirky, upbeat and teaches me something new every single day, I have formed quite the sisterhood here on Substack and most recently met some of you IRL. Keeping up with a daily practice, no matter how challenging, always outweighs not keeping up.
So if like me, you find yourself grappling with what to write or struggling to find the words to journal, remember this… it's ok to start small. Embrace the micro-movements, the one word wonders and the three minute musings. For within those brief moments of reflection lies the potential for profound insight and transformation. And who knows? You might just surprise yourself with what emerges from the depths of your soul when you give yourself permission to simply…write.
Wow, and there was me sitting here thinking, I really don’t have anything to write about today.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xxx
