I’m in a movie watching kind of mood. But the problem is, I seem to struggle with which movie to watch, spending almost an hour searching. Please share some of your favourite films, I do love a good film recommendation.
Similar to my love of memoirs, I’m attracted to film documentaries and true stories. However, recently I’ve been drawn to rewatching films my kids used to enjoy when they were younger such as “Toy Story”, “Coco”, “The Jungle Book”, “Lion King” and “Finding Nemo”. Such a big kid at heart!
When I watch a movie with a discerning eye, I’m always curious about how it pulls me right into the story, resonating with what’s going on for me day to day. This happened recently when I watched the Netflix film “American Symphony”. Not knowing much about the protagonists Jon and Suleika, I was mesmerised by their creative journey, and how their love story was enriched by the practice of music and writing therapy.
I love how films can serve as a mirror, reflecting the complexities of my emotions and experiences. One film in particular that did this was the animated masterpiece “Inside Out”. The story invites us into the intricate workings of the mind, urging us to embrace the full spectrum of emotions. And I was thinking whilst watching the film, how similar it was to the art of journaling. Both film and journaling, a profound tool for self-discovery and understanding.
Much like the characters in the film “Inside Out”, I’ve learnt how to appreciate the value of every emotion, a journey into introspective writing allowing me to explore the richness of my own thoughts and feelings. I do believe that acknowledging this is a vital brushstroke in the canvas of my own life.
Have you ever watched the movie “Inside Out”?
I highly recommend you give it a go.
It’s a film that explores emotions and challenges societal norms, by highlighting the essential nature of the entire emotional spectrum. As a viewer I was compelled to embrace the idea that every emotion, including sadness, plays a crucial role in my life. The story weaves the complexities of Joy and Sadness, illustrating how these seemingly contrasting emotions can coexist harmoniously. I loved this aspect of the film. So cleverly narrated.
As I peeled back the layers of Rileys story, I was confronted with the profound realisation that my personality and the way I recall memories have shaped the very essence of my existence. I know I seem to be going ‘deep in thought’ here today, but watching “Inside Out” has been a testament on how certain films make me feel. So much so, I want to watch it over and over agin and immerse myself in the messages they conveyed. Anything that sparks contemplation and influences how I perceive and navigate the world has to go into my wellbeing toolbox. Roll on a duvet day, as I’m yet to watch “Inside Out 2”.
If like me, you’d like to take a deeper dive into this topic, here are some therapeutic journaling prompts inspired by the themes of embracing the full spectrum of emotions. You might have to sneak off and watch the movie though ;)
1. Exploring Emotions - reflect on a recent experience that triggered a strong emotional response. Describe the emotions you felt and consider how they might align with the emotions portrayed in “Inside Out”. How comfortable are you with embracing the full range of emotions in your life?
2. The Harmony of Joy and Sadness - Recall a specific instance in your life where joy and sadness coexisted. How did these emotions complement each other, and what did you learn from this experience? In what ways can joy and sadness work together to enrich your emotional landscape?
3. Personality and Memory - Examine a significant memory from the past that shaped a part of your personality. How do you perceive this memory now, and how has it influenced your life choices and interactions? Consider the role of memory in shaping your present self.
I hope you’re able to delve into the parallels between insightful movies and the art of journaling. Maybe you’ll be able to uncover a shared narrative that encourages leaning into ALL of your emotions, be that happy or sad.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
