Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting my local Maggie’ Centre in Cardiff, a beacon of hope and support for individuals and families navigating the challenges of cancer. As I stepped though the doors of this remarkable place, I was immediately struck by the warmth and compassion in the room. It’s a super funky space, with bright swashes of colour and natural light bursting from every possible corner of the building. I’m sure it’s been up for many architectural awards. I love it!
You may have visited a Maggie’s close to where you live, if not, the centre goes above and beyond in its mission to support those affected by cancer, offering a lifeline of professional assistance that extends far beyond medical treatment. From advising on how to manage side effects of chemotherapy to alleviating financial worries, Maggie’s provides a comprehensive range of services designed to help people regain a sense of control in the face of life-altering illness.
What truly resonated with me was the centre’s ethos of accessibility and inclusivity. At Maggie’s, all support is offered free of charge, without the need of an appointment or referral. Their simple yet profound motto “Just Come In”, embodies their commitment to providing a welcoming sanctuary for anyone in need.
I was totally inspired after visiting the centre, so much so, I’m eager to contribute to their mission by hosting a few therapeutic journaling workshops. Having witnessed firsthand the power of journaling as a tool for emotional expression and healing through the coaching I offer, I am passionate about offering this invaluable resource to individuals living with cancer. Through therapeutic journaling, I do believe I can empower individuals to navigate their journey with greater resilience, using their journal as a trusted companion and outlet for their emotions.
In collaborating with Maggie’s, I hope to contribute to their holistic approach to cancer care, supporting individuals and families as they navigate the complexities of diagnosis, treatment and beyond. One of my recent students had this to say about her recent experience at Maggie’s…
“I really struggled through treatment mentally and would of really appreciated help to sort through my feelings at the time of treatment - but it’s also of help afterwards as after treatment finishes the medical team essentially just ‘drops you’ back into real life with absolutely no psychological support.
I ended up having a bit of a break down during radiotherapy this time last year and was lucky to find help at the Maggie’s centre and received some counselling (but it’s only a short course) - I think that had I’d been shown journalling (and met you at the time and a group of women sharing a similar experience) perhaps I wouldn’t of been in such a bad way… Maggie’s was alive saver!”

Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
