For as long as I can remember, the idea of a ‘she shed’ has captured my imagination, offering a glimpse into the world where tranquility reigns supreme and inspiration holds no bounds. For me it would be a space where I could retreat to and indulge in my passions, whether it’s writing, reading, photography or basking in the peace and quiet.
But my obsession for a shed extends far beyond mere aesthetics. It’s a reflection of my longing for a space to runaway to, even if it’s at the bottom of the garden. It would be a space where I could daydream guilt free, snooze on the veranda in the winter sunshine and journal for hours until I’m all out of ink.
Do you own a she shed? What’s it like? Do you sit in it all year round? What’s the decor like? Is there room for two? Maybe you have an actual writing shed, do you use it and if so does it inspire you to write for days on end?
Today, the mere ‘old garden shed’ has evolved into something quite extraordinary, they have become bigger, more stylish and contemporary, with eco friendly and sustainable materials. Some with bedroom and bathroom facilities, perfect for our grown up children, who’ve happily made the ‘posh’ family shed their home, mainly due to the cost of living and their inability to get onto the property ladder. Oh and the fact that washing and cooking might get done once in a while.
There has also been a growing demand for garden offices, especially since the pandemic, with an accelerated shift towards remote work and flexible schedules. I know many midlife women who have refurbished their garden sheds into a more inspiring workspace. Who can fault them. A place to hide and escape to would definitely be on my midlife list of priorities.
For me, the allure of having a ‘room of one’s own’, that I could transform into a writing sanctuary would be the perfect space for self-expression. Where time slows down and the noise of the outside world falls away. Like Virginia Woolf who sought refuge in her own private space, I think there are many of us who’d love a ‘shed of one’s own’.
One day I’d like to carve out my own personal oasis at the bottom of the garden, with a sea view in the distance. It might just be the key to unlocking the stories that lie within me. A girl can dream.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
That ‘shed’ beach hut looks dreamy! We have a garden shed room. It is in 3 parts, storage/garden shed/gym space.
This sounds magical!! x
