Celebrating world letter writing day
I love an excuse to write a handwritten letter, thanks to my Dad, he just reminded me that it’s “World Letter Writing Day” today.
I’m literally sat on the beach trying to squeeze the last remaining drops out of summer before heading back home, snack and stationery tools in my rucksack at the ready. All I need now is an old washed up glass bottle so I can post my letter out to sea… Dear Stranger…
When was the last time you wrote a letter? Did you ever have a penpal when you were a child?
Way back during lockdown, which seems like years ago, I started a letter writing club. A group of us used to meet up once a month and share our letter writing tales. Sometimes we wrote to loved ones, some of us writing to long lost friends and others sending a good old fashioned postcard back home from their travels.
Whatever your plans are today, I dare you to write a letter to someone you’ve not heard from in a while. Maybe a fellow Substacker would happily join you on this wonderful soulful experience.
Beyond its nostalgic charm, letter writing has so many therapeutic benefits. It not only helps us process our emotions, clarify our thoughts and help us express feelings we might find difficult to articulate in person. This simple activity could bring a sense of peace and closure when you need it the most.
Before I write my letter to a stranger from the beach, I’ll leave you with a few therapeutic journaling prompts, hopefully they will inspire you to write a letter. You never know it bring about some healing, clarity and connection you’ve been seeking all summer.
Write a letter to yourself five or ten years from now. Share your hopes, dreams and the lessons you’ve learned. What advice would you give your future self?
Why not write letter to your younger self, start by reflecting on a challenging time from your past. Offer comfort, wisdom and reassurance that things will get better.
Write a letter to someone you need to forgive. This letter doesn’t need to be sent. It could help you release pent up emotions by letting go of the past and any upsetting memories you’d prefer to release.
Even if you don’t have the time to write a letter to someone today. Save it for a rainy day activity. We all know someone who’d really appreciate to receive a letter in the post this autumn.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
I’m off to enjoy the last remaining rays of Summer 2024. Wish you were here!!
I missed World Letter Writing Day, but I do write letters and postcards often. II used to write letters to strangers and leave them in random places such as in shopping carts, on tables iin restaurants, inside my motel room, etc. I will never stop writing handwritten letters.
Incredible views!! 🤩
