Ah nostalgia, that wistful and often warm embrace of the past, has a curious way of sneaking up on us when we least expect it. Just as I was engrossed in the sight of a stealth like helicopter circling around my local town this morning, I found myself transported back to the days of my childhood. The memory evoked was vivid and unmistakable. Do you remember the TV show “Airwolf”? Even the soundtrack of the hit TV show makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
It made me think about all those fun TV shows I used to watch as a child. When time was simpler, the television landscape less cluttered and the number of channels you could choose could be counted on one hand. Do you remember those days?
I am showing my age now, but thinking about those bygone days makes me realise how much the world of TV has transformed since then. Today, we are immersed in a digital age with a surplus of channels and streaming platforms, each offering an overwhelming amount of content. It takes me nearly 30 minutes to find the series I’d like to watch, by which time I’m slightly frustrated and would rather head up to bed with my book - my kind of relaxation!
We’ve gone from having only a few choices, to an endless list of what to watch. It’s way too much choice and at times, it can leave us feeling inundated and anxious about selecting the right show or movie.
I can’t but help wonder if my kids will ever experience nostalgia in the same way. Will they look back fondly at a single TV program that captured their hearts, or will their memories be divided among countless options that surround them?
I know which era I’d prefer to be living in. Mine!
Saturday afternoons and evenings were filled with TV shows like ‘A Team’, ‘Knight Rider’ and ‘Dukes of Hazard’. I’d never miss an episode, it was a case of arguing with my younger brother over which series to watch.
So seeing that helicopter and feeling nostalgic has made me reflect on the simpler times, when we had fewer choices, but perhaps cherished our favourite TV show all the more. For me nostalgia, in many ways, is a time travelling storyteller that allows me to journey back to those moments of simplicity and appreciate the magic they held.
I’m also wondering what the helicopter is searching for in my local community. It’s still hovering and it’s been over an hour, I’d love to know what story is unraveling beneath it.
Until the next time
Take care & stay safe xx
Love this 💜 yes a different age when there were only 3 channels! You had to watch the same as your Mum and Dad or do without! Remember being quite excited when Channel 4 came along 😜
I can relate to that TV viewing era. 😊😊
