The marvel and the mystery of a motel, not the type you see in an old American movie - the basic, redundant and idle looking motels found alongside the highway. No, the motel I stumbled upon oozes comfort, style and an inviting aura of tranquility. The allure of my perfect motel, especially one bearing the prestigious Soho House brand, became my sanctuary. Â It was an unexpected gem that surpassed every expectation, delivering an experience that rejuvenated my soul.
Back in June 2023, I was nestled within the embrace of Mollies Motel. Â Each night, before hosting a memoir writing retreat with Clover Stroud, Mollies became my hub and offered me the respite I craved after the whirlwind of retreat preparations. Mollies had an ambience that felt tailor made for relaxation and it became my retreat within a retreat.
The accommodation exceeded an understated luxury - a cocoon of comfort  with spacious beds that invited me to starfish whilst I slept, it was that big. I was like a big kid enjoying the space that allowed for duvet angels.  Every detail of my room was meticulously curated, it really was the perfect haven for relaxation and ease.
Even the reception area oozed an ambiance conducive for productivity, if I lived closer I’d certainly be visiting regularly, and using Mollies as a base for remote working. Although I’m not sure I’d be so productive, as the cheery staff were ever so lovely to talk to and they certainly knew how to pour some of the finest coffees.  Honestly, as far as motels go this is on another level.
If you ever get the opportunity to stay, but work and relaxation isn't on your agenda, a fleet of funky city bikes are lined up waiting for you to jump on to. Â I definitely recommend an exploration on two wheels around the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside.
I’ll be sure to return in 2024 once Clover and I have confirmed new dates for our writing retreats.  As I no longer have a beach house for my run away trips, maybe Mollies Motel will become my new sanctuary for escapism.
Here is a Mollies Motel promo code - LOYALTY MATTERS -  if you’d like 10% off your stay.Â
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
If like me you crave getting away from it all, here are a few therapeutic journaling prompts for exploring your desire for escapism and the longing to run away…
1. Describe the emotions and thoughts surrounding your desire to escape.  What triggers this longing, and what does ‘escape’ mean to you personally?
2. If you could run away to anywhere right now, where would it be? Â Describe this place in detail - its sights, sounds and sensations. Â What draws you to this destination?
3. Reflect on any underlying reasons  for feeling the need to escape.  Are there specific stressors or challenges in your current environment or circumstances that contribute to this desire?
