Which book are you reading this week? Are you so engrossed in a book that you long to read it hour after hour? Isn’t it a wonderful feeling to be so mesmerised by a story, to enter another world and experience something so profound it moves you to your core?
You might be wondering why I’ve asked you those questions? I’m just curious.
Today I was listening to an audiobook I downloaded a few days ago, called “Between Two Kingdoms”. In the embrace of Suleika Jaouad’s memoir, I’ve found myself navigating the depths of a story both graphic and harrowing, yet emotionally moving. Halfway through her journey from cancer diagnosis to remission and re-entry into normal life, I’ve been mesmerised by the resilience that pours from every word she narrates.
This powerful story has sparked a calling within me. A calling to redirect the path of my therapeutic journaling workshops, towards those traversing the challenging terrain of cancer. In a couple of weeks, I’m set to visit a local cancer hospice in Cardiff, driven by the intention to volunteer my services and host journaling workshops for cancer patients and their loved ones.
This has been something I’ve been thinking about for a few weeks, more so after the transformation I’ve witnessed in those I’ve worked with so far.
It’s been nothing short of remarkable.
One of my recents students Julie, was diagnosed with aggressive Stage 3 Breast Cancer last year, she joined my online program '“Rage on a Page”, and on more than a few occasions, she mentioned how journaling has become a balm for her soul. Julie went on to thank me for being someone she could approach when she needed to rage, vent, and share how scared and overwhelmed she felt, especially on the days leading up to her chemotherapy sessions. We both agreed that the guided sessions had proven to be a catalyst for profound change for her. This propelled me to want to connect and help more women like Julie.
Whilst I was out battling the storms along the coast with the ridgebacks, I had an epiphany. That my work feels like a purpose I must fulfil - a calling to give back, especially as my own parents grapple with their own cancer diagnosis.
My hope is to contribute a sense of solace and empowerment to those facing the complexities of illness. As my mum courageously battles bowel cancer, and my dad makes strides in recovering from prostate cancer treatment, I’ve come to realise that teaching therapeutic journaling is not just a service, but a deeply cathartic experience for me.
My work is not about me, but a journey of shared strength and resilience. It’s a purpose I’m committed to for years to come, a humble offering of support in the face of life’s most challenging chapters.
If you or someone you know is struggling with the cruel disease that is cancer, please know I am here to offer any guidance with regards to therapeutic journaling. I’d happily connect and share some journaling techniques. Including top tips that are simple and easy to apply, if only as a stepping stone of hope during moments of rage, overwhelm and frustration.
Suleika Jaouad’s is an extraordinary human being with an extraordinary story, listening to her memoir has inspired me to ‘keep on keeping on’ with my mission - to help cancer patients channel their emotions into something more positive and creative, through the transformational practice of journaling.
I hope you enjoy a peaceful Tuesday, wherever you are in the world.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
I applaud you and give a deep bow. Thank you for creating connections that make such an incredible impact. Your messages and teachings are so powerful.
My step mom died from breast cancer a couple years ago and my dad is still reeling from the loss.
This is cruel disease that takes no prisoners. Thank you for being a beacon of hope in the darkest of days.
