Dear Friend
How are you today?
Which word best describes how you are feeling right now?
My word is CURIOUS.
I’m feeling really curious today, mainly because I have a new book to read this weekend…
“Women Are Angry” by Dr Jennifer Cox
This book arrives at a timely exploration of a complex and often taboo subject, especially as I’m hosting a journaling challenge "Journal Through July" over on Substack Notes and the topic is "Rage on a Page”.
Dr Jennifer Cox who is a brilliant psychotherapist with extensive experience, delves into the root causes of female anger and its impact on women’s health. Jen known for co-hosting
with writer Salima Saxton, was interviewed in The Guardian earlier this week, which I loved, as it highlighted her professional insights and serious passion to this work. Her approach has been described as a “force of nature” suggesting a no-holds-barred examination of why women are angry and how this emotion is affecting women’s wellbeing.I’ve only read a few pages of “Women Are Angry” before bed last night, but so far so good! The book promises to be a deep dive into the often overlooked topic of women’s rage. Which I am thrilled about, as I keep encouraging women I work with to channel their emotions onto the page and use their rage as fuel! Rage helped me start a business, leave a toxic relationship, and find my true calling in life - just saying.
Hopefully this new publication will shed light on a critical issue. Not just as analysis of the problem, but potentially as a guide to understanding and addressing women’s anger.
As I delve into the book later and over the weekend, I anticipate uncovering more valuable insights into the causes of women’s anger, its manifestations and perhaps most importantly, a few more healthy ways to acknowledge and express our anger to compliment my therapeutic journaling program "Rage on a Page".
If you’d like to explore your emotions further, particularly anger, rage or frustration, please help yourself to these journaling prompts…
1. Describe a recent situation that made you angry. How did you react?
2. Write a letter to your anger. What would you say to it if it was a person?
3. Reflect on a time when you suppressed your anger. How did it affect you physically and emotionally?
4. List five societal expectations that make you angry. Why do these particular expectations trigger you?
5. Imagine a world where women’s anger is fully accepted. How would your life be different?
6. Reflect on a time when your anger led to positive change. How did it empower you?
In my humble opinion, anger is a powerful emotion, that when channeled correctly, it can be a force for positive change and personal growth. I witness it every day. For some women, who’ve been conditioned to suppress they rage, learning to acknowledge and express this emotion in healthy ways, through daily journaling, it’s been a crucial outlet for their mental and physical wellbeing. It gives me hope, when I see more books being published on the topic of women’s anger, especially for our future generation. After all, channelled rage will empower girls to demand better for themselves and others both in their personal lives and in their workplace.
Until the next time
Take care and stay safe xx
